Earth is Our Savior
In chapter four, i read something that really stuck out to me. Pages 55-56 used imagery to show the hardships of being a soldier in the war. "To no man does the earth mean so much as to the soldier. When he presses himself down upon her long and powerfully, when he buries his face and limbs deep in her from the fear of death by shell-fire, then she is his only friend, his brother, his mother: He stifles his terror and his cries in her silence and her security; she shelters him and releases him for 10 seconds to live, to run, 10 seconds of life; recieves him again and often forever". In this quote, i learned that something we think is so simple and useless can mean so much to a soldier. To us, the earth is just something we take advantage of, we never give much thought to it. But to a soldier, earth is their escape, from the bombs, from the gunshots. Earth means life, and not life meaning you wake up everyday, fall asleep, and repeat until the day you die. To a soldier, life is being away from the violence, away from the fear of knowing that on the battlefield, it's every man for himself. "We march up, moody or good-tempered soldiers- we reach the zone where the front begins and become on the instant human animals". Soldiers aren't people born to fight for us, they have hopes, dreams. Being surrounded by people killing their own kind isn't one of them. Earth is the only thing they have to help them keep their sanity. At least for an instant.

Wow! That is a very interesting way to look at that quote! When i first read that quote, it stuck out to me as well. However, you took my thought 1,000 steps further. Earth is indeed something us humans take for granted. Soldiers definitely need the Earth to hide from bombs, bullets, etc. Very cool thought Shannon.
ReplyDeleteThat quote stuck out to me too. It really got the only way a soldier could survive is by earth. It shows pretty good personification saying earth is like family. I like how you said earth is their sanity because in other chapters they lose it in a huge fall out.
ReplyDeleteWow,Shannon, that was really good. To be honest that quote did not stick out to me, but now i am taking notice to it. What you said made alot of sense, i never thought of it that way. i like how you said that we think is so simple and useless can mean so much to a soldier. there are lots of things that we take for granted that a world war 1 soldier would kill for. nice post.
ReplyDeleteWow shannon! very interesting quote. i like how the author refered to America as "her". You may see the efforts of a soldier to be a hardship but to them its just another goal that they set for themselves to fulfill. Like Charisae said this quote didn't stick out to me either but when i look at it, it really grabs me.
ReplyDeleteNice post, you described the importance that the ground had to the men in WWI perfectly. This post completely explained why the earth was so important to them, without it they were sitting ducks. really nice job.
ReplyDeleteReally nice post Shannon! I agree with Tim on how it was cool that the Author described the Earth as "her". This quote was really interesting and really opened my eyes on how important the Earth was to the soldiers.
